Jeff’s Hardcore Core- RBC Canadian Open

The Canadian Open gets the unenviable place in the schedule as the on deck tournament to the U.S Open in Pebble Beach next week. It is a good thing it is used to a bad spot in the schedule as it usually falls immediately after The Open Championship.  Surprisingly, with the help of RBC, the top end of this field is strong with the likes of DJ, Brooks, Rory, and Kuchar. Unfortunately, the quality level drops off considerably and leaves us some sparse options in the lesser dollar range. We will talk all about what strategy to employ this week as well as who to look at targeting for your core, but first let’s recap the Memorial Tournament.

What went wrong? Having the top three highest priced guys in your core miss the cut in a smaller field is usually a death sentence. It is mind blowing to think that Rory, Kuchar, and JT could all miss that cut and would have had astronomical odds for it to happen before the tournament. Fortunately, our middle range of players stepped up and saved some of our teams and we will talk about that in a minute. Other dogs for us included- Sung Kang, Talor Gooch, and our old pal Keegan Bradley. All three of these guys are high upside, low downside options and we knew that going in. Our exposure was not that high to any of them, but Keegan rubs me wrong anyway so it chapped my hide more than the others.

What went right? Our middle range salvaged what could have been an ugly week and I actually had some teams with a chance heading into Sunday. On Saturday night my winnings on DK were up over $15k, but by Sunday mid-morning that had sunk down to about $3,000, which is exactly the amount I put into play. Matsuyama, Xander, Scott, Grillo, and Leishman were all great for some really strong balanced teams. Special shoutout to FGI member- Brian Gallucci who took 2nd place in the Drive the Green contest on DK and won $70,000. It is so rewarding when members of Team FGI hit big scores like Brian did this week. Stay in the game, be disciplined with your bankroll and good things will happen. It is not easy and there are many more downs than ups, but man those ups feel so very good.
