Jeff’s Hardcore Core- John Deere Classic
The John Deere Classic, a summer staple on the PGA Tour is this week’s event. Field strength is somewhat similar to last week’s Rocket Mortgage, as most of the top names on the PGA Tour get ready to head overseas for the Scottish and then the Open Championship in the coming weeks.
Before we dive into the John Deere, I just wanted to touch upon The Rocket Mortgage from last week. It was truly a monster week for the Tournament History truthers. For years, I have not understood those folks who take the stance that success on a particular course in the past is not relevant or important. Week after week we see that it is important. I have a notebook that I keep and jot down notes from events each week and consult it all the time for events of years past. In my notebook for Rocket Mortgage, I have “Tournament History is Important” with three stars next to it. Well, I just added three more stars as we saw Cam Davis, who had some atrocious form coming into the week win in Detroit AGAIN! It absolutely boggles my mind how a guy can come in playing so poorly and instantly snap into a winner just because of the course, but it happens time after time. It wasn’t even just Cam Davis though, Troy Merritt, a guy who has had good success there and who had been playing quite poorly (as he usually does) finished T17. Taylor Moore has been lost the last month, but had success at Detroit in his couple of appearances and he posted a T10. There were a bunch of other names that had poor form coming into last week, but success there in the past and well outperformed what was expected. I encourage you to circle, star, or do whatever that reminds you that Tournament History is important and KING at Detroit and build rosters accordingly.
