Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Houston Open

We are approaching the mid-way point of the fall season and have a bit of a lull before the Asian swing, with a very poor field this week at the Houston Open. I will talk about my strategy for an event and field like this in a bit, but all I can say is buckle your seat belt if you thought the first four events of the fall were high variance and unpredictable.  Before I dive into the Houston Open, lets recap briefly the Shriners from last week.

What went right?  With the exception of Brooks Koepka, who continues to chip away at my rosters, the core members in the top tier were pretty good.  Bryson DeChambeau’s Sunday charge shot him up to a T4, as well as Tony Finau getting to T9.  Clearly I would have really liked a win out of one of these guys for their prices, but those are very hard to come by. The plays that really helped were Ryan Moore with a T13 after I was swearing him up and down early on, the UNLV guy continued his solid play in Vegas.  Xin-Jun Zhang is another guy that I have been very high on this fall coming onto the PGA tour and he had another good showing with a T16 for his lowly $6,400 price tag.

What went wrong?  I already mention Brooks being terrible again in a lesser event that he clearly does not care about.  I cannot remember another golfer quite like Brooks that can turn it on in big events and do absolutely nothing (even just be one of the best 65 golfers in a shitty field).  It blows my mind, because his ownership is at 10% in these events and we can get to 2X on the #1 player in the world for only 20% exposure and we can’t get one time where he plays to his ability.  Very frustrating.  What else is frustrating is not having Na or Cantlay in my core (my 20 team lineup builds).  I had equal the field exposure to both of them in my 150 lineup builds, which helped give me a sweat on Sunday in the big $8, eventually finishing 10^th, but my other GPPs didn’t have a shot.  I will talk about Sebastian Munoz’s brutal snowman on Thursday in a bit, but that prevented him from making the cut which hurt, as well as Scott Piercy and JT Poston in the middle tier.

Onto this weeks event and thank goodness we have DFS, because I don’t think I would care in the slightest about this event if we didn’t.
