Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Honda Classic
We have concluded our stint on the west coast and are headed across the country this week for The Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Before we dive into that event let’s recap The Genesis Open and how my GPP core did. For the third week in a row, I had several guys in the core in the mix on Sunday contending for the victory. Finau (T2), Cantlay (T4), Cam Smith (T6), Thomas (T9), and DJ (T16) all members in my core had a chance to come out victorious on Sunday, which would have put us over the top and won some GPPs. It was obviously Bubba’s week however,as he proved once again that Riviera is his course and cruised to a victory. In the GPPs I played this week, I came out profitable albeit minimally, as I did not have any really high cashes, just a lot of teams that cashed. Of the 17 players in my core, 13 made the cut and the majority of them produced value. Other than the guys I already listed, some other highlights included Hahn (T14), Kokrak (T20) at $7,500, and Jamie Lovemark (T26) who was only $6,600 and owned by nobody. For a while on Friday it looked like we could snag a Top 10 out of him as he was flirting with the leaders, which would have been amazing, but he fell back over the weekend. There weren’t many lowlights, but Leishman and Ollie hurt pretty bad. I felt like Leishman offered a very high floor along with a high ceiling for what I felt was a really good price at $8,500. I was wrong and it took out a quarter of my teams. Ollie was another real disappointment as well. Keegan pulled a Keegan and shit his pants on Friday to make me regret including him in my core as well. If we continue to hit our core as hard as we have been and have so many guys in contention, we are going to start nailing the winners eventually. There is nothing wrong with finishing profitable in GPPs and giving yourself a good chance.
I just wanted to mention that I was listening to the PGA Tour radio station on Sirius/XM on Sunday morning and specifically to a show called Rinker’s golf tips because he had Dr Mark Broadie, the author of the book Every Shot Counts on his program. If you have not read that book I would highly recommend it. It revolutionized statistics on the PGA Tour and the strokes gained metric that we rely so heavily on for our research today. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that you could go on demand on Sirius/XM and listen to that interview because Dr. Broadie is always very insightful and I learn something every time I listen to him or read his material.
This week the Tour heads to Florida at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, where alot of players make their residence, including some Euro players. Be sure to check out the player database to find out who lives in the area: Player Database.
One of the things I do personally every single week is analyze the winning lineups of GPPs. Last week I detailed Team FGI member GLORYHOG’s $100k winning lineup. This week I wanted to analyze the winning lineup from the $4, 20-max contest on Draftkings because I think it illustrates exactly what I discussed last week and many times before about lineup composition, aggregate ownership, and being contrarian. The winner of this event was Jordanridge23 and I will breakdown his winning lineup below. If you have not, be sure to read Zach’s three part series detailing the winners of all GPPs throughout 2017.
