Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Hero World Challenge

Back to DFS Golf action this week and off to another dreary, dreadful location for these poor PGA players to have to endure four rounds of golf, The Bahamas. Despite the fact that we have just an 18-person field, I have found myself really liking this event the last few years. Top names in the world, condensed tee times, and of course this year we have the added interest of Tiger Woods return.

The tough part about this week is that much of the edge we have over the field is gone with such a small field and no-cut. In order to win a GPP this week, we will need to be nearly perfect with our rosters. It is not an easy task to determine in what exact order the field will finish, especially when we are talking about the top names in the world. I would recommend that you play this week, but cut back the amount of bankroll exposure you have, since our normal edge is not there. I would say play 20-25% of what you would normally play in a given week.

With that being said, I remembered slaughtering this tournament last year, so I looked back at my results and my core and sure enough, I did. I had 100% Matsuyama exposure which is rare for me, but given the small field size I believe you need to have 70%-100% of the player/s that you have the most confidence in. Besides being all in on the winner, I also had the most exposure to Fowler, DJ, Snedeker, and Bubba who all finished in the Top 6. In my trusty notebook, I have notes that say I was extremely confident about my core going into the week. I had already written my Crystal Ball 2017 article then and had featured Matsuyama and Fowler in it, so having huge exposure to them was natural. This week I feel confident, but it probably isn’t to the level I was at last year.

I definitely have some strong opinions on the players in the field this week, which will help determine who I will be rostering and who I will be fading. This week we absolutely need to take a strong stance on who we are targeting and not be too spread around. The contests on Draftkings are actually surprisingly decent for such a small-field, so props to them for doing that right. I realize a lot of their optimism is due to Tiger’s return, but either way, I am happy with the sizing.

Many of you have emailed looking for an estimated time frame on my Crystal Ball article 2018. I am currently working on it and will have it out in a few weeks. Zach is also working on his three part GPP series of articles analyzing the data from 2017, which you will not want to miss.

Stay disciplined with your bankroll this week, enter some contests, and sit back and enjoy watching some golf.

Best of luck this week Team FGI!
