Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Greenbrier Classic
It took a while for Rickie to realize that he was far and away the class of the field last week, but when he did on Sunday, we saw just how easily he could dominate a field like that, unfortunately for him it was too late. The first three days I was not thrilled that I included him in my Core and owned him as much as I did, but in the end he delivered a solid T3 finish and 88.5 Draftkings points. I will be putting a few bucks on Rickie to win The Open Championship this week when I am in Las Vegas. The Core had the winner in both the European Tour (Fleetwood) and on the PGA Tour this week in Kyle Stanley. There is no getting around it, we need the winner on our rosters if we are going to have any chance of winning the large field GPPs. Besides, Stanley and Fowler, Bill Haas (T13), David Lingmerth (T5), Nick Taylor (T29), Matt Jones (T38), and Kevin Streelman (T17) all played well and paid off their price. As is the case most weeks we had a few grenades and this week it was more of an atomic bomb with Branden Steele who was owned by 35% in the $8, $39 in the $333 on DK, 40% in the $4 on Fanduel, and 70% in some of the 50/50s I was in. When a guy has not missed a cut since last year’s PGA Championship you think you are pretty safe that he will play the weekend, especially in a smaller field. In my Wednesday email I did mention that I thought his ownership would be astronomical based upon all the buzz throughout the industey. I always preach about fading the massively owned guys, unfortunately the data was too strong for me to pull the trigger and I ended up owning him. That was my mistake. Be sure to remember situations like this in the future when we know that guys are going to be massive chalk, 30%+ based upon so much buzz throughout the industry. If you fade a guy like Steele last week and he finishes anywhere but in the Top 5 it really does not hurt you that much at $8,900. But if he blows the cut you gain such a tremendous advantage over a large share of the field. I strongly believe the reward outweighs the risk in these situations.
This week we have another thin field as we draw closer to The Open Championship and guys starting to head overseas to become acclimated. Last year this event was cancelled due to the massive flooding where some parts of the Old White TPC under several feet of mud. One of the big stories this week is going to be Phil Mickelson, who is now a property owner at Greenbrier as we all are very familiar due to the many commercials played during weekend golf coverage. If you are into Falconry, and really who isn’t? then you need to move to the Greenbrier. Although he is clearly one of the best players in the field this week, there is some question marks surrounding how he will play, having just parted company with his long-time caddie, Bones.
