Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Genesis Open

A Monday finish for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was very symbolic of the disarray that last week’s tournament was from before the tournament all the way until the end. A flurry of withdrawals early in the week last week and then two key withdrawals on Wednesday (Cantlay and Dahmen) kicked us off. I had my core set and ready to go, but had Cantlay on 40% of my rosters and Dahmen on another 10%. Usually if there is a last minute withdrawal I will manually change my rosters, but that was just too many to do it right, so I chose to just adjust my core significantly and go through my process with our lineup generator again. The wds actually ended up helping me quite a bit as I pivoted off of Cantlay and Dahmen to some guys that finished really well. The Pro-Am feature is just a killer for a tournament. How good would 4 rounds at just Pebble Beach be for the tournament without any amateurs fouling it up? This week we actually get four rounds at the same course and no amateurs so I am very excited about that. I will dive into the Genesis Open shortly, but first let’s recap Pebble.

What went right. Because of the forecast I ended up stacking a bunch of lineups with guys who played Spyglass on Friday and it turned out to be beneficial. Mickelson, Day, Langley, Streelman, and Gay all finished in the Top 10. Having Mickelson on 20% of my teams put me 1.5X overweight the field and gave us quite a boost. Having to move 10% off Dahmen helped me increase my exposure to Gay and I ended up moving some shares to others including Scott Langley and Kevin Streelman. The reason I moved to Langley and a couple others was mainly because of the forecast that I talked about in my update. The wind was supposed to be heaviest on Friday afternoon and I wanted players on the more sheltered Spyglass course.

What went wrong? Being overweight on Mickelson, Casey, and all the others I just talked about cashed the majority of my teams and gave me a shot a popping a big one. However, as you know it takes all six of your guys to perform amazingly to win a large field GPP and I had just enough grenades on my key rosters to eliminate that possibility. Guys like Snedeker, Im, Hadley, and Lowry were complete duds. I mentioned using some Cantlay shares on Spieth and Fleetwood who both had the promising course, but neither did anything outside of making the cut which was not very beneficial and they failed to pay off their price.   Owning DJ was not beneficial either as he gave us one of his uninspired performances. I am not sure if we can even blame it on the jetlag, because even over the weekend he was as bad as you will ever see him. Given his amazing history at Pebble and the fact that he didn’t want to screw his father-in-law I felt like we would get a top-notch effort and result out of him. I get really frustrated with DJ, because he is so talented and can coast to easy victories, but he can also sleepwalk through tournaments like we saw last week. A good, profitable week throughout GPPs, so let’s keep the momentum going to this week.
