Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Genesis Open

A monster week for the PGA Tour this week and more importantly a monster week for us in DFS golf.  We have the strongest field we have seen thus far this season and of course Tiger will be following up his successful Farmers Insurance Open debut.  I am really excited for this event and the next several months, especially coming off of such a good week last week.  Speaking of last week, a part of Team FGI, GLORYHOG won the Drive the Green contest on Draftkings for an incredible $100,000.  Congrats to GLORYHOG on beating out over 146,000 other entrants, a truly amazing win. I will dissect his winning lineup as well as his core below so keep reading.

We also had a ton of other winners last week and although they did not win $100k, pretty much all wins are a good thing. The Core had a very strong week so let’s talk about some of the good things about the core.  I decided that a stars and scrubs approach was optimal and the two studs that we went with turned out pretty good.  DJ of course posted a runner-up finish and Spieth disappointed, but still managed a T20.  Obviously a DJ/Day stack would have been the best as Day recorded another impressive performance.  Clearly he has regained his elite form after a hiatus, so we need to keep him in the front of our minds for upcoming events.  Avoiding McIlroy and Rahm proved beneficial as Rahm had his third straight Sunday swoon and Rory did not even make it to the weekend.  With the pricing the way it was on Draftkings, Austin Cook and Rafa Caberera Bello were the obvious beneficiaries of inflated ownership due to their price.  I decided to pull a full strategic fade on both because of that and it worked out well.  Austin Cook missing the cut was huge as it shaved off a third of the competition in GPPs.  Cabrera Bello started strong but fell back a bit and finished T26, which for his price was solid, but not a disaster for us who faded him.  I think in certain situations that strategic fading is a really important component of game theory and our overall success.  As you can see with Austin Cook, the reward is much greater than the risk.  Other positives that came from last week included Chez Reavie finishing T2, Streelman 6th, Kokrak 35th, and Henley T15.  Some of the negatives included missed cuts from Kisner (which still baffles me), Kirk, Hoge, and of course Patrick Reed.  I had quite a bit of exposure to Reed last week because it seemed like everything lined up for him.  I was still even hopeful for him on Saturday when he only need to go E at Monterey, where most everybody was posting solid numbers, but disappointingly he could not.

Weekend golf continues to be an outstanding way to grow our bankroll.  Even in weeks where the regular slate does not come through for us, it seems like weekend golf is there to pick us up.  Stacking Monterey players, and especially those who started on the back nine in minimal winds on Saturday proved to be the elite play.  In his column, Adam mentioned several of these guys like Casey and Grace.  I also mixed in some low $ guys who I knew nobody would own strictly because of the situation of playing at MP, including none other than Ted Potter.  If you have not played weekend golf, I would encourage you to give it a try, because I feel like we have a significant edge over the field.  The majority of people playing do not understand the overall strategy in weekend golf, and they make big mistakes, giving us an advantage.

As I talked about earlier, the Genesis Open is the event this week and it is a loaded field.  I am enjoying the roster construction options that we have this week based upon the pricing.  I think it is obvious that Dustin Johnson will command the highest ownership, so we need to make a decision as to whether that means we are on board with the masses or if we jump off the DJ train for this week and hope it derails.  There are a bunch of options that I really like in the low $7k range, so it makes that decision that much more difficult.

Best of luck this week Team FGI!
