Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Dell Technologies Championship
It was a virtual roller-coaster ride of emotions through all 4 days of DFS for The Northern Trust Open. At first I wanted to break my phone as several guys looked terrible out of the gate like Lovemark, Grace, Hoffman, and Finau and were set to blow up a large amount of my rosters. Then, both Fowler and DJ (for whom I had several stacks with both of them) took control of the event and were tied for first and Hoffman, Finau, and Grace came storming back. Hoffman and Finau both made the cut, but Grace himself was infuriating as he rallied all the way back from death at +5 to get to +2 within the cutline with only the 36th hole to play, which he only needed a par. Grace was actually playing the 9th hole and not the more difficult 18th hole, but he managed to put it in a bunker from only 120 yards out and failed to get up and down for par and blow the cut. It was an absolutely atrocious effort from Grace and you can probably tell how salty I am about it as it ruined several really strong teams and cost me a bunch of money.
Gary Woodland was another guy who delivered a very special effort to go from well inside the cutline at +1 early on Friday to plummet on the back nine and miss the cut as well. Finally, one of the worlds best, Matsuyama just flat out did not show up the first two rounds and made an unexplainable early exit as well. Enough about the negative, there was some positive to be had as we had the winner Dustin Johnson as well as good performances by Chappell (T6), Day (T6), Rose (T10), Schauffele (T17), Hoffman (T17), and Schwartzel (T29). It was the third consecutive week we have identified a guy who has been struggling and in poor for thus lowering his price tag and ownership and got a really strong performance from them. It was Justin Rose this time and he was only owned by about 10% of the field in many GPPs. The week before it was Shane Lowry and the week before that it was Patrick Reed. We will be sure to use this strategy going forward and keep identifying these types of break-out candidates. Overall, it was an o.k. week, but clearly not where I strive to finish with my Core. I will continue to utilize all of our tools and data to build my Core and hopefully we can break the bank again one of these weeks.
