Jeff’s Hardcore Core- CIMB Classic

This week we have one of the more unusual events that we have all season with the CIMB Classic.  First of all, the tournament is held in Malaysia, so you have U.S guys traveling across the world and we have lineup lock on Wednesday evening.  Not to mention this is also a small field (78 players), no-cut event and includes a bunch of Asian players not too many people are familiar with.  Before we dive into the CIMB, let’s talk a little about the first event of the 2018-2019 season, the Safeway Open last week.  I always like the Fall season, because new players on tour are massively under-owned.  I just think so many people are focused on football season that they do not take the time to research who these guys are.  I am always looking back at data and following what some of the high volume DFS players are doing and found that several of them, including the “top-ranked” player had literally zero exposure to Sun-jae Im last week.  He entered 150 teams into the big $6 GPP and had exposure to 61 different players and Im was not one of them.  What this tells me is his focus is not on golf and this is exactly how we can gain an edge in the Fall.  I featured Im  in my Top 10 Newcomers to Target article and included him in my core.  Im turned out to be a critical piece to most large field GPPs last week.  Not all newcomers had good weeks, but because they were all under-owned you did not have to have a huge stake in them to be overweight.  Im was one of the highest owned newcomers and he was owned at 9%.  Throughout the Fall I would encourage you to keep having some exposure to guys like Im, Cameron Davis, Cameron Champ, like last week that all were low owned and performed well.  Even those like McCarthy, Albertson, and Hickok, do not write off completely after one event.

My biggest problem last week was my upper tier guys did not perform the way I needed them to.  I had a ton of exposure to Tway, Im, Davis, Fritelli, Champ, Spaun, etc, but Cantlay, Niemann, and Grillo all underperformed while Snedeker and Moore who I did not own excelled.  Plus a couple other grenades like Lovemark and Kirk sunk a bunch of my teams as well.  So despite having 36% exposure to Tway, I could not get a team up into contention and my closest ended up in like 80th place in the big $6.

Many of you did have some big wins, so to you I say congratulations and keep up the hard work. Be sure to use our lineup generator to produce teams based upon your core of players.  It is a great way to set exposure levels to your highest owned guys and then mix in lower owned players that can put you over the top in large field GPPs, like Im last week.
