Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Charles Schwab Challenge
The second major of the year is in the books and our longtime favorite Xander Schauffele was able to finally seal the deal. You can’t tell, but I am grumbling when I say that, because for the first time in years, I did not own Xander in my core. I have talked endlessly about how I love his all-around game, how he is built for majors, and how I expect him to win multiple times every year, and featured him in my Crystal Ball Article this year (6th winners already). However, he has failed badly to come up clutch and put up wins in tournaments. Two weeks ago, at Wells Fargo sent me over the edge and got me to believing maybe he wasn’t capable of winning in a big spot. I really hope all of you stuck with him and owned him in your core last week and were able to celebrate. The real kick in the pants for me was the complimentary guys that I had in my core, that could have easily gone alongside Xander and propelled me to some big money. Shane Lowry, Sahith Theegala, Keegan Bradley, Harris English, Tony Finau, Tom Hoge were all very good. It was a painful lesson, that we need to stay on guys, no matter how frustrated we become with them when they do not close out tournaments. If they continue to play well and post Top 10s, like Xander has, we need to bite the bullet, exercise our patience, and own shares.
This week we head to classic Colonial Country Club, the longest running host of a tour event (79th time). Despite the fact we are following a major and this is not an elevated event, the field does feature a handful of top names in the world. Best of luck Team FGI!
