Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Charles Schwab Challenge
The Charles Schwab Challenge, a.k.a whatever other dumb name it has held over the years is our event this week and the important thing is not the name, it is the host course, which is Colonial Country Club. I have fond memories of this event, because in 2015 I hit my core hard, won over $50k and qualified for the first and only Live Golf Final. I feel really comfortable with the course and what type of player we should be targeting this week. I will detail my strategy as well and hope we can smash our core this week. Before we do let’s recap the PGA Championship-
What went right? The $8k range for the most part (outside of Bubba Watson) was very kind to us with Kuchar, Matsuyama, Cantlay, Scott, and Casey all having reasonable if not very solid finishes. Even a couple $7k guys held up their end of the bargain as Kokrak and Pieters both recorded Top 25s. Van Rooyen was also a very nice hit that I had about 8% exposure to as he notched a T8 for only $6,700.
What went wrong? Anytime you don’t have either of the top two finishers your GPP chances are pretty dead, especially in really large field GPPs. My attempt to cram three to four $9k guys into lineups did not pay off as all of those guys disappointed. Lower dollar guys that I had significant exposure to also hurt bad like Vegas, Palmer, Poulter, and of course Sergio, who may have burned me for the last time. Overall a real disappointment because the core never was in it from early on Thursday. The one thing that I will say did go right was the stacking of am/pm tee times that I advised in my weekly email. I did do that on 10% of my teams and those teams were my most successful and salvaged a bit of my bankroll last week.
Onward and upward with Colonial this week, Memorial next week, than 2 weeks after that the US Open from Pebble, which is going to be outstanding!
Best of luck this week Team FGI!
