Jeff’s Hardcore Core- BMW Championship
Well we are 2 for 2 hitting the core for the FedEx Cup Playoffs and looking forward to keeping the momentum rolling the next two weeks. Last week we pretty much slaughtered everything having all the pieces it took to win all large field GPPs. DeChambeau was of course the critical piece as I was extremely high on his incredible talent compared to his price even though it has increased. In addition to Bryson, we also had Justin Rose (2nd), Matsuyama (T4), Cabrera Bello (T7), Koepka (T12), Stanley (T12), Hatton (T12), Cantlay (T24), Woodland (T24), and Fleetwood (T24). The balanced approach we decided to take, turned out to be the best as we could squeeze most of the key cogs onto rosters together. There weren’t many bad parts to the core last week, but those that were included obviously Billy Horschel withdrawing (bad luck), Ian Poulter missing the cut, Jon Rahm really disappointing, and Webb Simpson, who was leading on Saturday absolutely tanking the last two days.
I wanted to touch on one thing because I believe it is critical to long-term success as a DFS player. We received a few tweets from folks who stated that their week was over after the Billy Horschel withdrawal. Let me just review what we have preached to Team FGI for the past several years now and that is do not let one person take you down. This is especially true with a person who is $8k and his expected ownership is to be in the single digits. There just is not any reason to overexposure yourself to that type of possible downside. I was high on Horschel coming into the tournament and I am confident he would have performed well had he not gotten sick and withdrawn. But, I knew that I could be 2X the field overweight on Horschel by just owning him on 20% of my teams. So, no it did not feel good to shave off 20% of my rosters on day 1, but it allowed the other 80% of them to have a chance, and with that chance I was able to win 4X my investment on the week because I hit the rest of my core hard. Most of the time the most I will own any one player will be 50%, possibly 60-70% if I really want to be aggressive and most of the time that is with an elite player in the world, which limits the risk a little more in itself. You cannot control sickness, injury, and freak things happening that can cause a withdrawal. That is the variance/volatility that we need to accept in all of fantasy sports and gambling. You need to be smart strategically and protect your downside. Do not shove all-in on anybody. Do not overexposure your weekly bankroll unnecessarily to one player. There is no need to own a guy at 75%, if we expect him to be owned by 9% of the field. Long-term success in DFS is more than just picking the “correct” guys all the time. Great poker players do not always just have the best hands. The employ the correct strategies to be winning players over time and do not allow the occasional bad beat to sink them. Bankroll management, proper strategy, lineup composition, ownership projections, game theory, etc, etc, is what we teach and needs to be followed. This is why Team FGI is among the most successful players in all of DFS Golf and Football for years now. Tons of content sites have come and gone since we launched because they think it is strictly about “picking” the correct guys every week. Certainly it helps to hit your core more often than not, but it is not solely about that. You need to implement all those other variables to be a profitable and winning DFS player over the long-term, which should be your goal. That is why we are the originals in the fantasy golf industry and still around kicking ass. Now, let’s go get the BMW Championship this week!
