Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Arnold Palmer Invitational
Another amazing finish to a Sunday of golf as Tiger Woods battled a slew of people down the stretch with Paul Casey of all people being the most clutch of them all and posting a -10 in the clubhouse about an hour before any of the other contenders finished. If you have been with FGI for a while you know our salty past with Mr. Casey, but that has not prevented me from including him in my core the last two weeks. His play has been consistently good for Top 10 finishes for some time now and I thought eventually he would pop one, but even if he didn’t, a Top 10 for his price would have been tolerable. The week got off to a rough start as 10-15% of my teams were lost immediately as Kevin Na pulled a late withdrawal, after lineup lock. This is probably the most frustrating part of DFS, no matter the sport. When a football player goes down early with an injury or a golfer doesn’t even step on the course and we take a zero, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. When there is no injury news prior to the tournament and no indication of a withdrawal, we need to just try and shake it off as frustrating as it is.
Speaking of frustrating we had our share of frustration at cut time as well. Jason Dufner pulled off a special effort to miss the cut by putting up three bogeys and a double in his last six holes to miss the cut by one. It was very Keeganish. Chesson Hadley was awful again for us and so was Chez Reavie and John Huh. The gem of the week however goes to Jordan Spieth. I am not sure what is wrong with Spieth right now. The last several tournaments his putting was the main culprit, as his tee to green game had been good, but the first two rounds at Valspar his tee to green game was terrible as well. I have been waiting for Spieth to breakout and win again and Copperhead seemed like the perfect place for him to do it. I am torn as to what to do with Spieth going forward, especially at Augusta. I think we just need to be willing to stay on him, because at some point he will regain his dominant form.
There were some bright spots however amidst the wreckage. Five members of the core finished in the Top 10 (Rose, Garcia, Casey, Simpson, and Grace). Knox and ZJ had really nice performances for us and if not for a Sunday collapse, Snedeker would have been amazing for us as well. Overall, it was an o.k. week with some highlights and lowlights. I am definitely not content with the outcome and will continue to grind to be better. A lot of big events and huge prize pools to be won in the coming weeks.
