Jeff’s Hardcore Core- A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier
Only DFSs players know the crazy places that you can be when you are sweating lineups. Last week was a great example, as I found myself sweating not my own, but rather our buddy and fellow Team FGI member Aaron “juice” Johnson in the huge $5 GPP with $100,000 first prize. I was in New York City over the weekend with my family and I was following along on my phone app which was breaking in and out of service, which was frustrating as heck, as I was rooting for Aaron to bring home the $100,000. As we stood in the line at the Statue of Liberty, he was sitting in first place. I know very well from many years of experience, things can change dramatically almost instantly in GPPs however. Aaron had Molinari, Hossler, Hadley, Poston, Gay, and Ancer on his roster. As we boarded the ferry both Hadley and Gay bogeyed and that was enough to drop Aaron back to 3rd place. Service continued to break in and out as we walked around Liberty Island as I frantically tried to see the standings. By the time, I was boarding the ferry back to the mainland, Ryan Armour had surged into 2nd and Ancer continued his lame Sunday. In a matter of a couple hours he had fallen from 1st place and $100,000 to 11th place and $1,500. As I am walking uptown through the financial district I felt as down as if it was my own team that was in contention, but could not hold on. The reason I share this with you is it demonstrates a couple things. 1. Just how top heavy this particular GPP is, with the only a handful of points separating many thousands of dollars and about 30 points being a difference of $98,500. It serves as a reminder that it is first place or bust in GPPs like this $100k to the winner and the millionaire maker with the tremendous disparity between 1st place and 2nd place. If you are looking at building a conservative lineup that does not appear to have any risks, these are not the contests for you. 2. How things can change with only a stroke or two. If Ancer could have posted a couple of late birdies and Armour was the one who fell back, things could have been so much different. It doesn’t take much to change things and you need everything to go perfectly to hit the big pay day that we all strive for. In the end, it was a great run for Aaron and FGI. He is a very sharp guy and I am sure we will see him make runs like this again soon.
I did not have any teams in contention for 1st in any large field GPPs personally, but I did not miss by much as I had a ton of teams in the money. The core was very strong overall with all 18 players making the cut. It has been a while since it has been perfect, but going 18/18 was certainly nice. Having the winner, Molinari was also huge with compliments from Woods (T4), Gay (T8), Hadley (T8), Spaun (T27), and Poston (T27). The only player that I can honestly say the I missed in the Top 10 that I seriously thought about was Hossler. Since the pricing was so tight, we had to make a stand with 2 or 3 players up top and I really liked Molinari, Woods, and Fowler all of which performed well, but I could have gotten more bang for my buck swapping Fowler for Hossler. We could have certainly used better weekends from key players with large exposures like Tway, Lovemark, Rodgers, Woodland, and Lingmerth. Overall a solid week and I heard from a ton of you that won some serious money. Keep up the great work Team FGI!
