Jeff’s Hardcore Core- 3M Open

The PGA Tour is officially back in Minnesota for the first time in my lifetime and I could not be more excited. TPC Twin Cities is a fun course, that actually used to be a sod farm. FGI is going to be well represented at the course all week. Personally the plan for me is that I am going to bring my kids out to the pro-am on Wednesday, then early on Thursday and probably Friday and Saturday afternoon. We are going to dive into the 3M Open, the course itself, and the strategy and players that I am going to utilize in GPPs this week. Let’s first recap the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

What went right? It was a tough week to get all 6 of the players on your roster through the cut, as only about 3% of teams on average throughout GPPs were able to. Eleven of the sixteen players in my core made the cut. With the exception of Dustin Johnson, who I will talk about in a minute when I talk about what went WRONG, the rest of the top of my core was outstanding. Of the next six guys, five of them cracked the Top 20 with highlights of a T5 from Niemann and T3 from Sabbatini. Viktor Hovland showed a bit of the high level talent that I know he possesses and finished T13. Folks, this guy is the real deal and we are going to be seeing him ascending the world rankings over the next couple of years. Honestly I think the play is to continue to roster him each week as long as we get him at a reasonable price. It will not be long until he is up in the $9k range (in strong fields). A few other real nice hits were Kyle Stanley who finished T21, Wyndham Clark with a T17, and Sepp Straka with a T11. Those guys nice runs on Sunday, brought me back from looked to be a poor week into one that I was slightly positive. After DJ bit the big one on Friday, I told myself a break even week would be a miracle, so I was pretty happy.

What went wrong? Look no further than Dustin freaking Johnson as the worst part of my core last week. Head and shoulders above anybody in the field, he clearly did not show up mentally last week. There were only two players that returned value above $9,500 (Matsuyama and Snedeker), so it’s not like we missed out on a ton of goodness. DJ crippled 40% of my rosters with his lifeless performance and that is the second week in a row that we were burned by an elite player (Koepka the week before) that didn’t seem like they wanted to be there.  The other missed cuts belonged to Tway, Meritt, and Ryder, all of whom we had less than 20% exposure to, so it wasn’t the worst. Overall, it was a tough week on an unknown course, with a ton of surprises (including a win from an alternate who wasn’t even available on Draftkings), so a slightly profitable week is not a terrible result.
