OVERVIEW

It’s been awhile since we last played the team event at the Zurich Classic. Last year’s edition was obviously cancelled due to COVID-19, but it seems like it’s been even longer than that, probably because 2020 seemed like the longest year ever. As you may be aware, this event went from a typical stroke play event to a team event in 2017 and it seems as though the fans have really embraced the change. One instance of this embrace is that DraftKings is actually running contests for this event this week. From a DraftKings perspective you’ll only be able to take one player from the team, but you’ll be getting all of the points the team scores. Example: Jon Rahm & Ryan Palmer, you can only take one of them on your team but will accumulate whatever points either of them score. The format for this week is Best Ball – Thursday & Saturday and Fourball (Alternate Shot) on Friday & Sunday. I think it would’ve been better if they would’ve swapped the days, but I vaguely remember hearing something about changing the format two or three years ago to up the suspense or something. Speaking of format, the biggest part of this week will be the format. In Best Ball, I’d say there’s about 70% of the teams are live. When professionals are playing best ball, they really have no care about how they play because they’re playing alongside another professional golfer who has just as good of a chance of making birdie. Expect a lot of low scores on these days because of this mindset. Fourball will obviously be the deciding factor as the team who plays most alike should excel in this format. One thing I’d look to do is play guys who have not only been paired together for this event, but also in previous team events – Xander & Patrick Cantlay and Marc Leishman & Cameron Smith immediately come to mind.
