OVERVIEW
We’ve gone from multiple course layouts, three day cut events and this week we get the return of the vaunted No Cut Event. With no cut events there’s always the lingering thoughts of “will my player withdraw” to completely ruin my lineups, so I’ll be scaling back again this week and my cash exposure will be extremely minimal as I feel the edge is reduced in these fields. All week you’ll hear about “leaving salary on the table to differentiate your lineups”, but as we’ve seen a lot this year, when everyone is telling you to do something, the opposite can become contrarian. My wisdom in the game strategy department is simple; if you’re going to play, make the best team(s) possible. We have no course history this week as this event had been previously held at Doral in years past and since there’s no course history we’ll need to rely on course flyovers to make assumptions as to how players will attack each hole.

TOURNAMENT BACKGROUND

o The Course
• Club De Golf Chapultepec
• Par 71
• 7,330 yards
• Poa / Bentgrass greens
o Location: Mexico City, Mexico
A few key items to point out:

  1.  The fairways and rough are Kikuyu and the greens are Poa/Bent.  This is different from the bermuda greens the players just saw at the Honda Classic last week.  We can look at the west coast swing to find similar turf as both Torrey Pines (Farmers) and Riviera (Genesis) sported that combination.
  2. The elevation of the course is 7,382 feet, meaning the course yardage of 7,330 yards will actually play closer to ~6,500 yards as an adjusted yardage.  This could make the course much easier for the bomber, but it also can take away the advantage that they usually have on longer tracks.  Most of them will be able to club down off the tee and not have to use driver, which can be a huge advantage for those who tend to spray it off the tee with their driver.  There are a significant amount of trees that they will have to deal with if they stray from the fairway.
  3. Many of the Par 4s are short, including six under 410 yards. We will be analyzing Par 4 scoring on holes under 400 yards and take that into account in our recommendations. You can checkout the layout of each hole at the PGATOUR website: http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/wgc-mexico-championship/en/course.html
  4. For the above two reasons, scoring is going to be plentiful.  Guys are going to eat up the short Par 4s and if the winds stay down, the course is really indefensible for the best in the world.

o Past Champions: None, first time being held at this course

KEY STATS TO TARGET

o Strong Emphasis – SG:T2G, Birdie Or Better, SG:APP, Par 5 Scoring
o Important – SG:P, Driving Distance, Scrambling, Proximity to hole from 50-125 yards
