OVERVIEW

I’m not going to touch on last week very much because of the format and lack of data provided to those of us who aren’t lucky enough to have been granted access to the PGA Tour’s website which gives the strokes gained data in great detail, but it was really cool to see Billy Ho play like garbage for a lot of the event and still notch another win and continue to show us he has a different gear when put in the right situations. His ball striking leading into this event had been really good for him, so we probably should’ve seen a breakthrough coming, but I missed it. This week we stay in Texas for the Valero Texas Open, an event that was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Historically this has been a weak field event due to it’s place in the PGA Tour schedule, and this week is relatively no different with the exception of Dustin Johnson adding it to his schedule before defending his title at Augusta next week. With weak field events we get the “longshot” narrative, but after looking into past leaderboards, there have been elite’s who have played in this event in the past and have played well. In 2019, Sungjae Im & Scottie Scheffler both tied for 20th, in 2018 Joaquin Niemann finished 6th  & Billy Horschel finished 11th , in 2017 Brooks Koepka was the runner-up to eventual winner Kevin Chappell, 2016 we saw Patrick Reed finish 2nd to Charley Hoffman and in 2015 Jordan Spieth finished runner-up to Jimmy Walker (who used to play really well at this event. This event is the prototypical “ball strikers are rewarded” type of event, so our usual process should result in hitting a winner as well as putting together some solid DFS teams.
