OVERVIEW
Another major hangover this week as we head across the United States to Connecticut for the Travelers which has been in this slot on the PGA Tour calendar since 2007. The course was designed by Pete Dye and like most Dye courses is short at just over 6,800 yards. It’s another one of his masterpieces where you need to play the correct shot almost on almost all of the holes if you want to score well. Sure, there are times where being a bomber helps, but last year the rough was up and it was more beneficial to be playing from the fairway further away from the hole than trying to gouge it out of the thick stuff. Bubba Watson has won the event three times (and has been a runner-up once) now, so it obviously fits his eye, but the type of player who should excel here has a solid tee to green game and is good with mid-to-low irons. The Par 5’s make up two of the five easiest holes and scoring on them is basically mandatory if you want to have a shot at winning the event. Making a Par on either of them will feel like a bogey. There’s one short Par 3 in the 11th hole, but Par 4 scoring from 400-450 yards is where most of the holes fall. For One & Done gamers, I’ll be looking at Paul Casey, Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen, Bryson Dechambeau as primary plays and for long shots I like Daniel Berger, Charley Hoffman, Brandt Snedeker and Chez Reavie.
