OVERVIEW

Before we talk about the Sony Open, let’s reflect on Harris English’s win at the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Participants. He finally won an official PGA Tour event after 7+ years without winning one. Did he deserve to belong in the field? Considering how hot he was to finish the year, I’d say he did and it was a massive oversight on my part to think that the course wouldn’t play to his strengths. I’ll be better about things like that going forward. If you won some money last week (and I saw some excellent screenshots in the chat and on socials) congrats! This week we head to the other island in Hawaii for a little bit different test, but ultimately, we should see some more birdies as long as the wind stays down. There’s been a lot of crossover wins between our corollary courses and here, so picking players who have historically played well at those is going to be my primary approach to building lineups this week as we’ve seen Matt Kuchar, Patton Kizzire, Justin Thomas, and Fabian Gomez all win at Waialae and one (or more) of the corollary courses. There’s also the narrative of players who played last week winning this week, which was debunked last year with Cameron Smith’s win, however, Smith did play in the President’s Cup which gives the narrative of “playing within the last couple months” a bit more run and actually makes more sense as players who have played should be in a better place with their game than those who haven’t played competitively in the past 4-6 weeks.
