Weekend Warriors

OVERVIEW

This week’s course is slightly tougher test, though it’ll still be a high scoring affair. Much of the debate of the course is accuracy off the tee or bomb & gouge. Winners here haven’t really hit fairways, while everyone else finishing four rounds have been much more accurate off the tee, so I’d say it’s more of a mix of accuracy than just bombing. Aside from that, the week’s biggest narrative surrounds those who played the first week after a long layoff (aka those who have played in the Tournament of Champions). Seven of the last eight winners played the week prior to winning the Sony Open. Obviously, this narrative actually has some common sense to it, as players who are already acclimated to the time change and course conditions should have a leg up on those who are just getting into town or just arrived. There are 21 players in the field who played last week which gives us a solid foundation of proven winners who have already shaken off the rust with four rounds of competitive play. You’ll notice that the majority of the article is based around players who played last week, whether they finished well or not. You should take your shots on those who haven’t played yet in GPPs at low to mid-level exposures if possible.  The course does require a bit more accuracy off the tee and scrambling. This is also one of the few weeks where we highlight Par 3 scoring as a key stat to target, so keep that in mind as well when building lineups.
