OVERVIEW
The Tour stays off the mainland for one more week as they travel to the island of Oahu for the Sony Open. The course is a bit tougher than Kapalua so scores will naturally be a bit higher this week (don’t tell that to Justin Thomas who destroyed the tournament record here last year). Par this week is 70 (versus 73 last week) so we’ve got less Par 5’s and more Par 3’s from last week, but the differentiator this week will be Par 4 scoring. You absolutely need to score well and often on the Par 4’s this week. The winds are the course’s only line of defense this week, so if they’re not blowing, we’re in for a score-fest. If players don’t find the fairway here, they’re probably not going to fare well, so if you’re trying to decide between a player who sprays it off the tee and one that doesn’t I’d give the nod to the guy who’s more accurate as a tie-breaker only.
