OVERVIEW

This week we get a better field in Scotland than we saw in Ireland for last week’s Irish Open as this is the first Rolex Series event since the restart on the European Tour. The good news is Renaissance hosted last year’s edition, so we have a little bit of course history to go off of, not that 2-4 rounds of play is even considered an adequate sample size, but still. The course is a modern links course which is comparable to many previous host courses – specifically Castle Stuart in that the greens are undulated. It’s definitely a “2nd shot course” meaning you need to be in prime location off the tee in order to score out here. There are three new holes which run along the shore, giving it more of a true links feel and we still have the deep pot bunkering, thick rough and “gorse” that Scotland is known for. The fairways have been tightened up a bit since the original design, but last year’s edition saw plenty of birdies so I wouldn’t say hitting the fairway is the edge this week (last year’s winner only hit 63% of the fairways off the tee for the event). More importantly, hitting the greens in regulation at over 80% seems to be the key to success so we’ll be targeting those with a high baseline for hitting greens in regulation as well as our typical form-runners and ball strikers alike.
