OVERVIEW

We have another first this week on the European Tour, however, this is a first & last as this event is only scheduled to take place this year as a one-off event. This week we head to St. Andrews. no, not that one. “The new course” which is four miles from the Old Course, was built many moons after the Old and features many links-adjacent features as the old course but is not really considered a true links course because of the lack of water. There hasn’t been much play specifically on this course as of late, though there was an Open qualifier last summer, but only seven of the 18 holes were used for that event. Weather is key in deciding who comes out victorious at Fairmont. If the wind and rain stay away, we could and should see low scores, but if it gets nasty so will the scores. The weather as of writing is expected to be a bit cool and not so windy, but it’s Scotland and things can change quickly. As for the course, the fairways are wide and exposed (just as you’d expect a links course to be). The greens should be firm and fast due to the winds whipping any kind of moisture out of them on top of the cooler temperatures. Overall, this should play fairly straight forward as the Par 5’s are gettable and the par 3’s aren’t too long (the longest measuring at 220 yards). There are a couple par 4’s with some teeth (4th hole – 509 yards, 10th hole 492 yards) but there’s also three that measure under 400 yards too (4th hole – 345 yards, 7th hole – 320 yards & 15th hole – 359 yards).
