OVERVIEW

After a nice break in the PGA action, we head to Mexico for one last event before the winter holidays. Last year’s edition saw Brendon Todd knock off his first of two wins (RSM was played after Mayakoba last year) seemingly out of nowhere as his lead in performances had him outside the Top 25 in all strokes gained categories except for putting (which is normal for him regardless of year). The year prior we saw Matt Kuchar stiff the local caddie who helped him win the event, in similar form leading in (he was striking the ball much better than Todd was leading up to the victory, but nothing eye popping). As of writing, I can only assume Harris English will be heavily owned considering his form and history. Pat Perez has backed up his win here in 2016 with finishes of 6th & 8th the last two years, with less than stellar lead in form as well, I’d expect more ownership than we’re used to on him this week. I think the best approach this week is to take a combination of in-form players who also have a good feel for seaside or breezy course conditions. Looking at past performances also tips a hand to the better putters of the field finishing inside the Top 10 the last three years running, so uncharacteristically we’ll be leaning on them again this week.
