OVERVIEW
Well, I said I’d be shocked if the pros didn’t hit the -30 range at TPC Twin Cities, so I write this article in a state of shock. Mostly because I’m still baffled that Wolff drained that eagle putt up against the first cut on the 72nd hole to win the event, but also because the winning score wasn’t as low as anticipated. This week kicks off the final leg of the “Midwest Score-fest” as we head south from Minneapolis to Silvis, Illinois and the Quad Cities for the wedge-fest that is known as the John Deere Classic. Scoring at this event has been fairly sustained at around -20 to -23 for the winning score and we know why. This course is easy for these guys. There’s less water in play than there was at TPC-TC, which should result in lower scores and the event prides itself on being a catalyst for up & coming players. Last year we saw Michael Kim destroy the field by eight shots and has yet to be heard from since. The big news this week is there’s still one spot up for grabs for next week’s Open Championship, so the field is littered with players who have yet to get in. Motivation for these players is obvious and the fine people at Deere Run have a charter flight for anyone in the field looking to make their way to Ireland. This is a week where there shouldn’t be any excuses and we should see some more top tier golf from the brightest of stars. In the last five years, Jordan Spieth is the only favorite to go on to win as the tournament favorite, so it’s a good week to go down the board from a betting, One & Done, and DFS perspective. I’ll be looking at Hovland, Wagner, McCarthy and Niemann for One & Done purposes this week.
