OVERVIEW

The Joburg Open has provided us with South African winners in six of the last seven years, so there’s a good chance the South African stack could pay dividends this week. In two events held on South African soil, the natives have won one, and non-South African’s have also won one, but considering the field hosts more South Africans than any other nationality I’d say we see the trend continue this week. There’s not much to get excited about in this field, or in DraftKings’ contests, but I can’t help but play a few lineups because there are a lot of up & comers in the field and I’d like to be a part of their breakout. Like the Farmers events, this event holds its opening two rounds on two different courses, so I’ll be looking to stack the field that gets the better draw weather wise and course wise this week.

TOURNAMENT BACKGROUND

  • The Course
  • Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club (East & West Courses)
  • Par: 72 (both)
  • Yardage: 7,646 yards (East – more difficult) & 7,203 yards (West)
  • Greens: Poa & Bentgrass
  • Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Expected scoring: As mentioned above, I think targeting the best golfers that tee off on the West course first will be the way to attack this field (unless weather indicates you should play those on the West course on Friday). As of writing, there is rain in the forecast all four days, and delays are expected. Scores have been as low as -27 and as high as -17 in the past five years, so looking I’m leaning this year’s winner will be around -20.
  • Past Champions:
  • 2016: Hayden Porteous -18 over Fabrizio Zanotti [-16]
  • 2015: Andy Sullivan -17 over Jaco Van Zyl, Anthony Wall & three others [-15]
  • 2014: George Coetzee -19 over Tyrrell Hatton, Jin Jeong & Justin Walters [-16]
  • 2013: Richard Sterne -27 over Charl Schwartzel [-20]
  • 2012: Branden Grace -17 over Jamie Elson [-16]

KEY STATS TO TARGET

  • Strong Emphasis – Greens In Regulation, Driving Distance, Course History
  • Important – Current Form, Putting Average, Driving Accuracy, Scrambling
