OVERVIEW
Week two of the European Tour restart schedule brings us yet again another Challenge Tour/European Tour dual tournament. The problem with that is the field is primarily Challenge Tour players, with a few European Tour players being thrown in the mix. As we saw last week with Miguel Angel Jimenez surging for 54 holes and Marc Warren holding on for the win (while carrying his own bag), the European Tour players have what it takes to win, while the Challenge Tour players are still trying to get to that point. The first bit of news is that the tournament starts Wednesday so make sure you have your lineups finalized before you go to bed on Tuesday night. The course is very short at just over 6,400 yards and plays as a Par 70. Oddly enough, there are three Par 5’s on this Par 70 track, which means scoring on the Par 5’s is somewhat important. Along with the three Par 5’s is five Par 3’s, and only one of them plays over 200 yards. The shortest Par 3 is the 12th hole which plays only 138 yards, expect a lot of birdies here. There are three Par 4’s measuring under 400 yards, and one of them is a drivable hole, which should result in some fun come Sunday. Originally this was a 9-hole course laid out in the heart of lower Austria and was extended to 18 holes in 1998 by Jeff Howes (who has worked with Jack Nicklaus). The course is quite breath-taking as it’s at altitude and offers some scenic downhill tee shots, in fact, there’s only one flat hole on the course. In order to make the course a tougher test, the greens are designed to run away from typical shots, so placing approaches on the correct side of the green and spinning the ball to where the pin is located should be the preferred strategy. Precision is the one thing I keep thinking when looking at the layout. You need to be precise off the tee, as well as on approaches if you want to score here.
