OVERVIEW

First off, this will be the first of two events played at this course in back to back weeks. You’ll remember the European Tour did this about a month or so back and it looks like they’re doing it again this week. This week we have a regular stroke play event, containing a field of just 105 players. Next week is a “shootout” but we’ll get to that next week if DraftKings runs contests, I’m guessing they probably won’t considering the difficulty in classic contests, but hey who knows, maybe they’ll surprise us with Showdown slates! PGA National Cyprus Aphrodite Hills is a coastal resort course that measures just under 7,000 yards and plays as a Par 71. The coastal portion of this course is key, as there will be many beautiful shots of the Mediterranean Sea on several holes. There are some oddities with the course build as one hole sports a horseshoe green, there are cross bunkers and an old olive press in the middle of the fairways on holes 1 and 8 and there’s a shot over a canyon on another. Truly some beautiful imagination when designing this course. Its an exposed course, meaning the winds from the sea will probably keep scores in check. The fairways are bountiful so hitting them isn’t of high priority. The fairways and rough are made up of bermuda grass, so that’s one thing that is a bit different than most of the stops on the European Tour. With Bermuda rough, we see the ball nestle down to the crown of the grass rather than sitting up, which might be tough to navigate for short knockers with long irons, but we’ll try to stay away from them. Three of the par 5’s measure under 560 yards so those should be a breeze, but the fourth measures over 625 yards and should play as the toughest par 5 on the course, though birdie should still be in play. There are two drive-able par 4’s, which should help offset the scores on some of the other tougher par 4’s as well. All in all, I think this is a great week to watch golf on a beautiful course before they put lipstick on the pig for next week’s gimmick event.
