European Tour GPP Targets

The European Tour returns this week as it continues its swing in South Africa with the BMW SA Open.  A decent field comes together at the Glendower Golf Club for the 5th straight year headlined by two popular South African golfers, Brendan Grace and Charl Schwartzel.  Last year we saw Graeme Storm edge out Rory McIlroy in a playoff as well as the emergence of Jordan L. Smith, who finished with a solo 3rd.   This would be a sign of things to come for the Englishman as Euro Tour DFSers relied heavily on him throughout the season last year.  A trio of South Africans rounded out the top 5 and that will be a theme for me once again this year.  Specifically, golfers from South Africa have shown excellent form here on their home soil and make ideal GPP targets this week to fill in those empty slots in your lineups.  Europeans also have a decent record in this event at the Glendower Golf Club having won it three of the last four years here.  It is difficult to say who could emerge this here but the recent history shows that having just a little bit of previous success can translate into a big performance the following year.

The Glendower Golf Club is a par 72 course that measures 7,594 yards in length but actually plays a lot shorter due to the altitude.  Typically the rough here has played pretty thick so it will take accuracy off of the tee to remain in the mix throughout the four rounds.  Sometimes weather will play a factor here and if that is the case and the fairways become even narrower.  Trees and water will have their effect on scoring as well but there still should be plenty of birdie opportunities for those golfers who keep their ball in play.  Driving Accuracy along with Greens in Regulation will be the primary ball striking stats to concentrate on.  Scrambling will also be important for those errant tee shots.
