Jeff’s Hardcore Core- BMW Championship
I am writing this article from beautiful Hilton Head Island, South Carolina this week as I took the family down for a little vacation before the kids go back to school. I have never been down here before, but I will certainly be back. Those of you who live down here are extremely lucky. It is just a gorgeous area, with outstanding beaches, lush plant life, spectacular weather, good restaurants, and amazing golf courses. Speaking of golf courses, I was able to squeeze in a round of golf at Harbourtown with my wife and daughter and let me tell you it did not disappoint. One of my favorite courses from watching on television over the years, I made it a point to play it while I was down here, despite the outrageous green fees. It certainly does look a lot different in person than on television, but the narrow fairways, small greens, and what seemed like a million trees were all consistent with what I knew about it before actually playing it. At the course you have to have a forecaddie and he was quite impressed with my exceptional amount of knowledge about the course and the particular holes considering I had never played there. He had no idea how thorough us fantasy folks get in our research and analysis of courses. Anyway, it was a great experience and I hope to come back soon.
Another great part of the week was the success I had alongside so many of you Team FGI folks that I heard from who had success in DFS. On Saturday I was able to win the $444 Showdown GPP for $20,000 along with high finishes in most the other GPPs with the same lineup. Then on Sunday, I was a Louis Oosthuizen meltdown away from wining the big $5 GPP, but ended up taking 2nd place for another $40,000 (plus finishing high in other GPPs with the same lineup, like the mini max). Many of you have asked me what was the key and honestly I did everything that I preach each and every week. Build a tight core (35 guys for a 150 team build in a 120 player field), make sure aggregate ownership is in the proper range (ideally somewhere between 60-90%). My second place team had an aggregate ownership of 62.4%. Don’t be afraid to fade some chalky guys, and don’t own a bunch of guys in the $6k range (my team had none). I use all of the tools on FGI every single week and build my lineups using our lineup generator. I personally like to max out whatever contests I am playing in, so I am not at a disadvantage to competitors. I know that this team would have won $500,000 in the $25 GPP, but my weekly bankroll did not support max entry into that contest (plus the payout structure blows). I am strict about my bankroll management and do not overextend. Really that is it. Be consistent, put in the research, and of course, be patient. Big hits do not come along very often, but when they do it makes up for all the other weeks grinding. TPC Boston has been very good to me in GPPs over the years and I hope that trend continues in the future. Overall a great week, and let’s keep the ball rolling through this week’s BMW and into the Tour Championship and US Open.
Best of luck this week Team FGI!
